I was working on my senior honors thesis project. It was amazing to work on something I was so passionate about. It gave me the chance to do research alone, work with professors, and actually produce a deliverable and make a difference. Running my multi-phase project was great, and I am so proud of the outcome.
I was surprised by how detailed and difficult the IRB process was. I think it would have been very difficult without my research advisor. I plan on publishing this in the Journal of Collegiate EMS. I also plan on continuing this work and potentially implementing this into other colleges in the future.
The honors award helped me fund training equipment and deliverables. I was able to have CPR mannequins, Narcan trainers, and more to give participants actual hands-on experiences. Beyond that, I was able to give participants actual first-aid kits, Narcan, and more, so they could practice these skills in real life. I think that I am a more well-rounded and thoughtful person after this research. I am excited to talk about this in med school applications and continue this project into the future.
My reader, Barry Weiss, was beyond helpful for over 2 years. His class sparked my interest in this project, and he helped me develop it from the ground up. My advisor, Jessie Joyce was so helpful on the research side, from running statistical tests to working with the IRB and writing my final product.
