During the Spring 2026 semester, I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia. Living abroad allowed me to experience a completely different academic environment and culture while also traveling throughout Australia and Southeast Asia. One of the most valuable parts of the experience was learning how people from different countries approach education, work-life balance, politics, and social issues. I also gained confidence through navigating new cities, meeting students from around the world, and adapting to unfamiliar environments independently. What I enjoyed most was the combination of personal growth, global exposure, and the ability to explore new places while continuing to pursue my academic and professional goals.
One thing that surprised me was how quickly Sydney began to feel like home despite being on the other side of the world. I also did not expect how internationally connected the student community would be, as I met people from many different countries through classes, housing, and travel. Another thing that stood out to me was how much studying abroad challenged me to become more independent and adaptable in everyday situations, from transportation and budgeting to communication and problem-solving.
This experience helped me develop a broader global perspective that will be valuable in both business and real estate because these are industries that are increasingly international and interconnected. Studying abroad strengthened my communication skills and confidence in unfamiliar environments. These are all important in professional settings. Academically, it exposed me to new perspectives on politics, culture, and society that complemented my coursework at Syracuse. Personally, it pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me grow more independent and self-reliant. I plan to continue building on this experience through future international travel and by pursuing career opportunities that involve global business and real estate markets.
Receiving support from the Honors Program helped make studying abroad more financially accessible and allowed me to fully take advantage of the experience. The award reduced some of the financial pressure associated with international travel and living expenses, which gave me the opportunity to focus more on academics, cultural experiences, and personal growth. Thank you to the Honors program and the donors who make these opportunities possible for students like me. Studying abroad has been one of the most impactful experiences in my life. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity. Thank you!
