Screening with Filmmaker of “Honor & Duty”

Honors is co-hosting a historically significant event on Friday evening, September 16 at the National Veterans Resource Center.  This event will tell the forgotten story of the Chinese Exclusion Acts and AAPI veterans. Telling these stories addresses anti-Asian and other racism today, and growing global tensions.

A reception will be held at 5 p.m. at Grand Hall and Vice Chancellor Mike Haynie and Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion Mary Grace Almandrez will give remarks. The documentary, Honor and Duty: the Mississippi Delta Chinese, will be screened from 6-7:30 p.m. The film presents the untold story of the more than 22,000 Chinese Americans who served in WWII, including 177 from the Mississippi Delta, despite the discrimination of the Chinese Exclusion Acts.

Before the viewing, Prof. Chanelle Benz will give remarks on the Mississippi Delta.  After the viewing, Samantha Cheng, the filmmaker, will hold a Q& A.  She authored the legislation that led to the veterans receiving the Congressional Gold Medal in late 2020.
