Burton Co-Authors “Business the NHL Way”

Rick Burton’s book will be released
in October, 2022

Honors Core Faculty Rick Burton, endowed professor of Sport Management, and Norm O’Reilly, Dean of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Maine, have co-authored the book, “Business the NHL Way. Set to be released in October, the book draws on hockey-inspired stories to show how brands, institutions, and individuals associated with the NHL have consistently survived diverse challenges and thrived as a result of its decision-making process. Burton and O’Reilly explore business-related scenarios from the sport of hockey and link each lesson back to business, leadership, diversity, management, and sport outcomes. Multiple chapters in the book focus on social justice and racial or gender equity in hockey.

Burton and O’Reilly’s intent is to help businesses emerge from the financial and health disruptions of the global COVID-19 pandemic that not only altered the future of hockey but threatened business sustainability in every sector. Business the NHL Way is written for both casual and passionate hockey fans, and anyone eager to follow in the footsteps of a successful professional sports organization.
