At IMA Financial Group, I gained hands on experience working within a large, client focused insurance brokerage and risk management firm. I supported the team by assisting with client research, organizing policy documentation, and helping prepare materials for meetings and renewals. Through this role, I developed a better understanding of how companies manage risk, evaluate coverage options, and build long term relationships with clients. I also learned how important communication and attention to detail are in an industry where small errors can have major financial consequences. Overall, the experience strengthened both my analytical skills and my professionalism in a corporate setting.

One thing that genuinely surprised me was how willing senior leaders were to mentor interns and younger employees. I expected interactions with executives to be brief or purely formal, but instead, many of them took the time to sit down, share their career journeys, and offer honest advice. They were open about their mistakes, what they learned along the way, and how they think about leadership and client relationships. Some even followed up after initial conversations, which made it feel less transactional and more like a real relationship. It changed my perspective on corporate environments and showed me how much strong mentorship can shape early careers.

My experience at IMA Financial Group helped connect what I study in Finance and Information Management to how decisions are actually made in a professional setting. In class, we talk a lot about risk, capital allocation, and long-term value creation, but at IMA I saw how those ideas translate into real client conversations and strategic recommendations. It strengthened my interest in working in financial services, especially in roles that combine analytical thinking with relationship building. Professionally, it pushed me to communicate more clearly and think about problems from a client’s perspective, not just a numbers perspective. Overall, it made my academic work feel more practical and gave me more confidence about the direction I want to pursue after graduation.

Building on my experience at IMA Financial Group, I plan to carry forward the client first mindset and relationship building skills into my upcoming internship at Société Générale. At IMA, I learned how important it is to understand a client’s full context before offering solutions, and I want to apply that same approach in a global markets setting by thinking beyond just products and focusing on long term trust. I also plan to continue developing my technical skills, especially in financial modeling and market analysis, so that I can pair strong communication with strong analytical depth. Beyond the internship, I am interested in further research and independent learning around risk management and capital markets to better understand how different financial institutions manage exposure in volatile environments. Overall, I see my experience at IMA as a foundation that I will actively build on in more fast paced and global financial settings.

Receiving the Honors award made it possible for me to live close to the office, which had a bigger impact than I initially expected. Being nearby meant I was not stressed about long commutes or transportation, and I could show up every day focused and prepared. That comfort allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience, stay later when needed, and be more available for in person conversations and mentorship. It also gave me the flexibility to take initiative without worrying about logistical constraints. Overall, the support created an environment where I could prioritize learning and professional growth.
