I developed a reaction-diffusion model to observe the dynamic nature of Fructose concentration decreasing and HMF slowly increasing over time. This was done using MATLAB code. Some challenges I faced were learning the importance of defining boundary conditions in numerical solutions. In Dr. Walker’s Lab at Syracuse University, I am further developing methods to synthesize Zeolite with unique Synthesis properties. Throughout the summer, I have learned how these projects are advancing fundamental science and renewable energy research. I also learned about how feedstock contaminants and catalyst deactivation are critical challenges that limit the large-scale development of bio-renewable energy and chemical technologies. I was surprised that the reaction-diffusion model of Fructose and HMF required specific boundary conditions to be addressed, as MATLAB gave errors if we provided conditions that were too extreme. I also learned about the properties of Zeolite Synthesis in Dr. Walker’s lab after the reaction model was complete. 

Receiving this award helped offset some of my summer housing and meal plan costs. Having this award was an excellent opportunity because having housing and a meal plan without worrying too much about the price is essential for living on campus during the summer while conducting research with Dr. Walker. Without it, my housing and meal costs would have been too expensive and potentially unaffordable. 

This experience helped me develop an understanding of what a reaction-diffusion model is and acquire new skills in working in a graduate-level lab (Walker Lab) while learning how to conduct a ZSM-5 synthesis experiment. Dr. Walker also taught me a few concepts from fluid dynamics (will give me a boost in CEN 333 in Fall 2025 semester) to better understand the reaction-diffusion model. This will also help me find potential internships for next summer, as this type of research will equip me with unique skills that will stand out to employers. I will most likely work with Dr. Walker again if possible and aim to contribute to a publication; I may also decide to work in other engineering research labs at Syracuse University. This internship has enabled me to acquire new research skills, and I may choose to work in various industries, such as Micron or Clean Harbors.
