With the assistance of the Honors Professional Development Grant, I was able to participate in a conference in Washington D.C. The conference was a gathering of various US business and foreign business leaders that provide a platform to discuss international trade policies, market access, and investment opportunities. This experience broadened my understanding of fostering economic partnerships and navigating global trade dynamics. I also had the opportunity to engage in discussions about trade policies, particularly those impacting Africa, which aligns with my academic interests. I attended sessions like sustainable development in international commerce. I believe the connections I made and insights I gained from the conference will shape my approach to promoting equitable and mutually beneficial trade relations in my future career.
I was surprised by the extent to which cultural nuances and geopolitical dynamics influence international trade negotiations. Prior to attending the conference, I underestimated the complexity of aligning diverse business interests with national trade policies, especially when addressing sensitive topics like tariffs and intellectual property rights. Following my trip, I wrote a paper reflecting on the key takeaways from the conference, which focused on sustainable trade practices and their impact on Africa’s economic development. Additionally, I explored further research opportunities on trade facilitation policies in developing countries and their alignment with global sustainability goals. This experience was transformative in shaping my understanding of global trade and sustainability. It not only deepened my knowledge of international relations but also solidified my commitment to fostering equitable economic partnerships between the U.S. and Africa.
