South Africa Immersion: A Global Health Education Experience

Public Health and Nutrition students may substitute this course for HTW 304 or NSD 511.

This course begins with an online-supported module you will complete prior to traveling to South Africa. You’ll explore techniques and methods for working collaboratively with communities and focus on topics such as participatory planning models, cultural competency, and empowerment. Then you will travel to Grahamstown, South Africa where you will participate with local community partners to implement and evaluate a mutually-designed program. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit local NGOs, local community clinics, attend lectures by SU and Rhodes University faculty and local community experts, and immerse yourself in the history, education, health, and culture of South Africa.
