I took Green Britain and International Advertising. For the former, we visited a farm in Scotland, giant domes simulating different ecosystems in England, the Welsh Parliament, and many other places to learn how steps are being taken (or not, in certain cases) toward a greener Britain. International Advertising took us to the Amazon HQ in the UK, introduced us to graffiti through a local artist, and included a tour of VML, one of the biggest international advertising agencies. Throughout the course, and thanks to these visits, each group developed an advertising guide for a product of our choice to help it make a bigger impact abroad. What I especially enjoyed and appreciated were the carefully designed schedules and assignments that pushed us to step up our game yet remained manageable in the end.
I was surprised by the wide variety of people who used public transport in London. You could see many business professionals in suits on their way to work, alongside students, families, and everyday commuters, all sharing the same space. It is very efficient and easy to use.
Studying abroad with the help of Syracuse University has been transformative. Experiencing different value systems, commuting like a Londoner, and engaging with locals taught me the nuances of cross-cultural communication. I now feel less intimidated by the process of adapting to a new country and more confident that if given the opportunity to take on a role abroad, I would be well prepared.
I plan to use this knowledge and experience to help with marketing for La Casita, a Latino organization at Syracuse University, and to incorporate the extraordinary case studies from international advertising into my future campaigns.
Awards like this help make these experiences and growth more accessible for me.
Huge thanks to my professor, Ms. Carrie Riby, and my friend Daniela for recommending these courses, as well as to my friends in Honors for telling me about the award.
