In Spring 2024, I got the opportunity to study for a semester through Syracuse University’s London satellite campus. For those 3 and a half months, I studied the United Kingdom’s communication’s laws, learned about British masculinity in film through the cinematic universes of James Bond and Sherlock Holmes, was taught about the various ethical dilemmas facing old and evolving technology, and more. Additionally, I was able to immerse myself in the rich culture of London while also taking a few trips throughout Europe. Having never been outside of North America before, my entire experience was eye-opening and I learned more about the world and myself than I ever thought possible.

When I decided to study abroad for a semester, I knew that I would be living in a big city with few familiar faces and places, but I was astonished at how well the city is set up for those who lack their own transportation. Thanks to the Syracuse program’s inclusion of unlimited transportation around the city by both train and bus, I was able to explore so much on my own and with friends. Additionally, thanks to London being a walkable city with no food deserts, there was always a grocery store within a five-minute walk from me and plenty of safe sidewalks and paths to utilize wherever I went. Finally, as someone who tries their best to stay active, I knew living in London would be a challenge in terms of finding various activities. What I didn’t know is how blessed I was to encounter this problem. Up until December of 2023, I had always gone on runs from time to time around my neighborhood or on a treadmill. With no other option abroad, I went on runs quite frequently. Not only did my passion for running develop during the course of these few months, but I also saw more of the city than I could have imagined. I frequently ran around Buckingham Palace, the Tower Bridge, Big Ben, Hyde Park, and more. I even got the chance to attend a running club facilitated by a fitness influencer that I have followed for quite some time. Living in London forced me to adapt to my surroundings and gave me the chance to thrive on my own.

Traveling, living in a foreign country, experiencing various cultures and everything else that came with my experience abroad is something I will never take for granted. I am so thankful that I was able to take classes and explore the world for a semester. Studying abroad can be a very daunting opportunity, especially coming from someone who was surrounded by a completely different ocean than her family for four months. The experience can feel uncomfortable, isolating, and yet so incredibly worth it. After returning back to the States this past May, I am hopefully anxious to return back soon. London was a second home to me, and I cannot wait for the day I get the chance to go back to some of my favourite spots. After taking a class studying various British films and being in a city commonly shown in cinema, I am hopeful that I can potentially return not only as a tourist, but to create films and various content within the city. London is a diverse, beautiful city with so much to offer and be conveyed. I would love the opportunity to find success in a career that allows me to return frequently.
