Patty Terhune & Anjali Alwis Compete for Hult Prize

Honors students Patty Terhune (’17) and Anjali Alwis (’16) were part of a team selected to compete in the regional finals for a social entrepreneurship prize. Patty writes:

This fall, my team competed in the Syracuse University division of the Hult Prize. The Hult Prize is a social entrepreneurship competition that takes a prompt each year about a global issue and tasks entrepreneurs worldwide to come up with a business venture that will help ameliorate the issue. This year, the task was regarding the global refugee crisis. My team sought to develop an app that would help refugees by giving them a database to keep all of their information that could be accessed by non-profits and agencies, as well as healthcare professionals, that help them in the camps and once they are resettled.

We placed in the Syracuse University division and then moved on to San Francisco where we competed with 66 teams from all over the world. Every continent was present there and we got to sit in on a number of pitches that showed the unique experience of that individual’s country within the global refugee crisis. Even though we did not move on to finals in Boston in October, it was an amazing opportunity to get to meet and network with so many globally minded, socially conscious entrepreneurs and I am incredibly grateful for the experience.
