Module Magazine’s inaugural edition, “Architecture as Destruction,” has been awarded the Douglas
Haskell Award For Student Journals, presented by the Center for Architecture. This distinguished award is granted in recognition of outstanding student journalism and intelligent criticism in architecture. Through the generosity of the Center for Architecture, this award will support the making and printing of future issues and help expand outreach to students across Syracuse University.

Publishing its first edition in Spring 2025, Module is a platform for students to discuss and investigate architecture and theory through critical writings. Honors students and Module’s Co-Editors-In-Chief, Zach Ehrenreich and Isabela Santana, identified a lack of opportunities for students to engage with architectural discourse and writing and found an opportunity to bring a student-led publication and writing initiative to the school. Through Module, students at Syracuse can critically engage with architectural writing and have their work published.

The theme of the first issue, “Destruction”, invited contributors to explore how demolition and reconstruction influence architecture. Destruction has a dualistic purpose in architecture; it removes and erases, but invites creation. By considering these antithetical viewpoints of destruction, a viable discourse is established within the edition. In one article, a student analyzes the impacts of the destruction of the Nagakin Capsule Tower—a now destroyed modular tower which once housed people in Tokyo’s densely populated city—and its precedent for future urban housing. Considering complex viewpoints in architecture through writing has allowed students to raise questions, theorize, and debate within Module, creating a platform for these voices to be heard and amplified.

From its inception, students at the School of Architecture played a pivotal role in creating Module’s first issue. A team of writers, editors, and graphic designers assembled to shape the identity and purpose of Module, as well as host events and engagements that catered towards students at the School of Architecture and beyond. Module’s first print includes a collection of articles, interviews, and creative projects executed by students that reveal the intellect of Syracuse students and highlight the importance of student-led discourse and publications for the future of the architecture profession.

Bolstered by the success of the first edition, the Module team begins animate work on the second edition, scheduled for release this winter.
