With the Honors Internship Grant, I was able to travel to South Africa and work with the nonprofit organization Inkululeko. In addition to working with local learners after school, I completed a project that showcased future educational opportunities. Our projects were designed to have a lasting impact beyond our time in South Africa and could not depend on internet access due to load shedding, which is a common issue in South Africa. Learning about the extent of load shedding and its impact on education in South Africa was something that really shocked me when I worked with Inkululeko. As of right now, I am volunteering with the US-based branch of Inkululeko, called Friends of Inkululeko.
