Political Science and Policy Studies major Brian Steinberg (AS ’14) is researching the Singaporean opposition party and NGOs’ motivation to collaborate with the ruling regime and analyze the effectiveness of the strategy to spur liberalization and ultimately, democratization. Because touring Singapore for a brief five days while studying abroad in Hong Kong, did not give Brian enough exposure to the opposition movements, he will use his Crown Wise Award to travel to Singapore. “The trip will entail meetings with opposition party officials and PAP officials. Primary source interviews with leaders of alternative news sites and collaborating NGO’s will be the best method of collecting data on the motivations of the opposition movements, especially in a place where civic society must veil competing political interests.”
