What Do Engineers Do to Get Involved?
Just ask Grant Griffiths (EC ’15). Grant went to the Great New York State Fair with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Syracuse University Student Branch and helped run the IEEE booth. The group had different electrical devices at our table and demonstrated them to children who visited the booth. One of the devices was a fan that was powered by a hand crank. The kids would spin the crank and get the fan to blow. It demonstrated how hard electricity is to make. Despite the hard work, “They loved it!” Grant also designed, advertised, and taught a C++ Programming Workshop held in the Life Sciences Building which ran once a week for 5 weeks. Attendance far exceeded his expectations, and he was faced with around 20 students on the first day. These experiences have shown Grant the importance of getting involved with the campus; “People often wonder what a certain club or organization can do for them. As a new member of IEEE, I was excited for their events and tech talks coming up. I quickly learned that the great part about IEEE isn’t what they can do for me, but what I can do for them. Not only did I have a lot of fun with the organization, but I’ve also had a huge opportunity to change my campus for the better.”
