Speech and Debate Coaches

Seeking Applications for two Assistant Speech and Debate Coaches for Spring and Fall 2022. To help support North Side Learning Center’s new speech and debate team, we are seeking undergraduate and graduate applicants with competitive speech and debate experience to work as part-time assistant speech and debate coaches during the 2022 Spring and Fall semesters.

The North Side Speech and Debate Team endeavors to provide opportunities for high school students from the Syracuse City School District to practice public speaking and learn to advocate for themselves and their communities.

In support of this effort, the selected applicants will help run weekly speech and debate practice at the North Side Learning Center; document and promote the hard work and success of the North Side Speech and Debate Team; work one-on-one with high school students to prepare them for tournaments, conferences, and public speaking engagements; attend local and online tournaments and conferences as both a coach and a judge; and help students host three public forum speaking events for the Syracuse community.

Applicants should have competitive speech and debate experience at the high school or college level. Preference will be given to applicants with previous middle school, high school, or college coaching experience, as well as applicants who are currently involved with the speech and debate community.

Candidates should be undergraduate or graduate students at the time of application and during the assistant coaching period. They should have interest and experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students, as well as a reliable mode of transportation.

The stipend for this position is $1,200 for 3-5 hours per week through the 2022 Spring and Fall semesters, with potential for additional hourly work over the summer. Applicants should provide the names of two references, at least one of whom can speak about their speech and debate experience. Applicants should also provide a 2-page (maximum) cover letter briefly describing their involvement with competitive speech and debate, as well as any relevant coaching experience.
