Lax for Life
Katherine Frega (AS ’16) was a volunteer for The HEADstrong foundation’s seventh annual Nicholas Colleluori Classic lacrosse tournament in Ridley, PA. She was an honorary captain for the St. Joseph’s University team and shared her inspiring story about her own battle with cancer.
This very personal civic engagement experience was extremely important to Katherine because it gave her an opportunity to tell her story and become an example and source of inspiration. Katherine knows that “many young people aren’t personally affected by cancer, and seeing a person their own age can help give cancer a ‘face’ with a story behind it. It was rewarding to see the players’ attitude and spirit after I gave my speech in the way they played relentlessly. The HEADstrong Foundation helped me in multiple ways when I was in treatment, and through their work and funding of research I was able to be cured. Now that I am well, I have the opportunity to give back and make a lasting impact in supporting blood cancer patients and their families through the growing sport of lacrosse.” Civic engagement enriches everyone. Katherine’s story makes it real.
