Recycle, Reuse, Rescue

Students helping at Rescue MissionDid you ever wonder what happens to the clothes you donate to the Rescue Mission? The residents of Sadler Hall now know.

On Sunday, November 16th residents of the Sadler Honors LLC toured the Rescue Mission sorting facility and learned about how different types of donations help the Syracuse community and communities abroad. Then came the sorting of the clothes on a conveyor belt into piles based on their type and condition. While some students were sorting, others rubber-banded matching shoes together and loaded clothes into a machine that bailed them together.

Lucy Sutphin said of her volunteer experience, “I never really understood how complicated the process of distribution to non for profit stores was. I was very surprised to find out clothes that are considered unacceptable to be sold here are sent to third-world countries for women to sell. I plan to do this again in the future.”

Erin Welsh said, “I’m glad I signed up for this civic engagement because it offered me the chance to help the Syracuse community, my new home for a few years, very directly. Even though we only helped for a short amount of time on one Sunday afternoon, I learned that any help is valuable and the Rescue Mission could not operate without the work of volunteers. I think it’s important to remember that no small act of kindness is insignificant.”
