Thesis Title:

Reviving the Rust-Belt: An environmental design project

Yunqian Li

While social crises always emerge as different challenges, setting up a resilient community culture is crucial in helping families combat difficulties together. Therefore, building sentimental value in spaces and creating new perspectives within a community would help younger generations develop roots and contribute to their experience. Community space that engages and empowers local residents by translating the historical and cultural value into an immersive experience that would help the community to connect, bond, and project hope for the future. Utilizing precedents such as the High Line in New York, and Granary Square in London, the design proposal of the project, the site is re-activated by inviting the community to engage with the space through the artist market, cafe, amphitheater, and community gardens. The immersive experience is achieved through the dramatic visuals of the lighting conditions, interior architecture, and the vibrancy that living plants can bring.
