Thesis Title:
The Impact of Psychoneuroimmunology On the Interior Design of Healthcare Environments
Often, a patient's mental state is at the root of their illness and is a critical component of a patient's ability to heal, an idea explored in the study of psychoneuroimmunology. Recent case studies have found that the mind has the power to alter the body's response to illness and in essence, contribute to the body's ability to heal itself. Healthcare environments have a direct impact on the state of their patients and must ensure an atmosphere congruent with hope and strength to support the medical treatment plan. Thus, integration of holistic interventions, biophilia, and WELL Building Standards into the programming, treatment, and the environments in healthcare facilities would improve the healing process and mitigate further regression of patients battling the disease. This study explores the design integration of WELL Building Standards in the interiors of a cancer care treatment center to strengthen the patient's mind-body connection to heal.
