Thesis Title:

Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) Explained: An overview of the far-reaching field of professional youth-focused theatre organizations in the United States

The professional field of theatre for young audiences, or "TYA" for short, is a vast and complex field that serves millions of young people in the United States each year. The TYA field, supported by Theatre for Young Audiences/USA, is plagued by specific managerial and financial challenges that differ from those faced by other arts organizations. Many of these obstacles are a result of the very foundations of the field itself, while others have come as a result of a general lack of awareness and understanding about what TYA is today. Using resources provided by Theatre for Young Audiences/USA, Matt Omasta of Utah State University's Caine College of the Arts, and the Child Drama Collection at Arizona State University, this thesis project provides an overview of the professional field of theatre for young audiences in the United States and explores the unique challenges faced by TYA organizations today.
