Thesis Title:

Cultivando Nación: Alternative Agri-culture in Post-María Puerto Rico

Deborah Orieta

Cultivando Nación: Alternative Agri-Culture in Post-María Puerto Rico explores the motivations and strategies of the food sovereignty movement in Puerto Rico. It departs from the context of hurricane María in 2017, and tries to develop an understanding of why it was so detrimental to Puerto Rico's food access. The bulk of the thesis revolves around field research in Puerto Rico through the summer of 2019. The project employs a framework that combines food sovereignty and agroecology with questions around (de)colonization, climate change, and resilience. Ultimately, it arrives at the conclusion that the food sovereignty movement on the island is organized through a producers and promoters' framework, which gives it visibility. Thank you to my advisor, Dr. Thomas A. Perreault, to my mentors in the Food Studies and Geography Departments, and to the farmers and activists on the island.
