Be a Writing Mentor to a Young Student<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Write Out is recruiting writing mentors for\nsummer programming, which will begin in-person delivery at three community\nsites during the first\/second week of July and end in mid-August. We are\nlooking for writers, artists, students, anyone (!!) that is interested in\nengaging with young people around the craft of writing and storytelling.\nPlease pass this information to those in your networks that might be\ninterested! We hold weekly creative writing workshops that encourage students\nto explore their creativity! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each afternoon session will last 1-2 hours,\ndepending on the site (details on sites and times in the survey). We work with\nstudents from the ages of 6-18, across various sites. This summer is our\nbusiest time of the year, with the largest number of youth participants across\nour sites (about 15-20 students per program). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writing Mentors are expected to attend weekly sessions, with\nlimited absences. They will also be asked to develop a lesson plan for delivery\nand to provide feedback on ongoing lesson plans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will be working with the Girls inc. program at YWCA, the\nNorth Side Learning Center, and La Casita Cultural Center. We are not actively\nrecruiting for our La Casita program, due to previous volunteer commitments,\nbut if you would like to connect with that site, please leave a comment at the\nend and we will reach out. We will collect these responses and the leaders\nof our various community programs will reach out at the end of June to solidify\nteams, schedule curricular calendars and plan a pre-program training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Write Out Syracuse:<\/strong> Write\nOut is a community writing collective that partners university students, local\nwriters, and professional authors with youth-focused afterschool programs to\nprovide a joyful literary experience. The program is co-designed with\npublic-facing community organizations to provide youth a space to share their\nown stories \u2014 on their own terms. The North Side Learning\nCenter (NSLC):<\/strong>  is a family literacy and community resource center rooted\nin the Northside neighborhood of Syracuse. For a decade, the center has been\ntailoring youth and adult language and literacy instruction to the needs of the\nNorthside\u2019s large refugee and immigrant population. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Casita Cultural\nCenter <\/strong>was established in 2011 to advance an educational and cultural\nagenda of civic engagement through research, cultural heritage preservation,\nmedia, and the arts, bridging the Hispanic communities of Syracuse University\nand Central New York. The Center is located in the historic Lincoln Building in\nthe city\u2019s Near Westside neighborhood. Facilities include an art gallery,\nlibrary, performance and workshop spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Girls Inc at YWCA\u2019s.<\/strong>: Girls\nInc. develops research-based informal education programs that encourage girls\nto take risks and master physical, intellectual and emotional challenges. Major\nprograms address math and science education, pregnancy and drug abuse\nprevention, media literacy, economic literacy, adolescent health, violence\nprevention, and sports participation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
