{"id":8720,"date":"2012-12-04T16:00:41","date_gmt":"2012-12-04T16:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/honors.syr.edu\/civic\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2025-09-22T13:31:35","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T13:31:35","slug":"about-civic","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/honors.syr.edu\/civic\/about-civic\/","title":{"rendered":"All About Civic Engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/honors.syr.edu\/civic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/12\/CrownLockup2021.png\" alt=\"Honors Logo\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"322\" width=\"1004\" title=\"CrownLockup2021\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading='lazy' \/>\n\t<p>|\u00a0 Civic Engagement<\/p>\n\t<p>Honors Program Websites<\/p>\n\t\t<h1>Document<\/h1><p>Document their various Civic Engagement activities in a timely manner<\/p>\n\t\t<h1>50 Hours<\/h1><p>Compile an overall total of at least 50 hours of activity.<\/p>\n\t\t<h1>Completion<\/h1><p>Complete 50 Civic Engagement hours by the end of their Junior year<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\"><h3>Guidelines for Activities<\/h3><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-0\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Civic Engagement Activities may:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>take place on or off campus, in Syracuse or elsewhere<\/li>\n<li>be a component of a service learning course<\/li>\n<li>have a partisan political or faith-based focus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some examples follow of the kinds of unpaid activities that can be used toward the Civic Engagement requirement:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>co-curricular activities of significance to the public good<\/em> (e.g., student government, publications, school, college, or university committees, peer advising, University 100)<\/li>\n<li><em>public service and community participation<\/em> (e.g. homeless services, environmental protection advocacy, service work with religious organizations, partisan political activities, government boards and commissions)<\/li>\n<li><em>arts and culture contributions <\/em>through performances in a University music, dance, drama, or other performance group (10 hours maximum)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain paid experiences that contribute to the public good may be used, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Literacy Corps (30 hours maximum)<\/li>\n<li>Resident Advisor (30 hours maximum)<\/li>\n<li>Peer Tutoring through the University&#8217;s Learning Center (20 hours maximum)<\/li>\n<li>Campus media outlets such as the Daily Orange, Citrus TV, Jerk Magazine, etc (30 hours maximum)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other paid or unpaid internships\/jobs will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis for up to 20 hours of civic engagement. For example, if you volunteer on 8\/1\/2024 then we ask that you enter them on our website by 8\/1\/2025.<\/p>\n<p>Hours must be served with an established organization.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow students can serve as supervisors, but family members cannot. Email <a href=\"mailto:honorsadvising@syr.edu\">HonorsAdvising@syr.edu<\/a> with your inquiries.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-2\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-2\"><h3>Finding Civic Engagement Opportunities<\/h3><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-2\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Honors can help you connect with other programs, both on campus and in the wider Syracuse community. \u00a0One of the best ways to learn more about the opportunities available is to check the want ads regularly<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>We&#8217;ve also put together a short list of starting places designed to help you begin to explore.<\/p>\n<p>Some courses at SU include a service-learning component. \u00a0These can be an efficient way to make progress on your academic requirements and Honors civic engagement requirements simultaneously. For example, every year, there are sections of WRT 105\/109 (fall) and WRT 205\/209 (spring) that include this component. \u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/ccc?key=0ArwLfP72o3t0dEJUbUtvMEhnSmxla1hQdDQtRWZET3c\">Additional courses that have included a service learning component are here<\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>and you may come across others.
