Archivist Engagement
Richelle Gewertz (AR ’16) volunteered her time as an archivist at the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. Her main responsibilities were to piece together parts of the cemetery’s history from old, archived photographs. The pictures would then become part of a booklet for visitors explaining the importance of maintaining an archive. Richelle says she used this project “as an opportunity to encourage visitors to re-envision their surroundings and connect to the site.” Though her volunteer work did not require any interaction with visitors, she believes she made an impact on the cemetery by helping “bring to light an important part of Philadelphia’s past that has unfortunately been left unrecognized.”
