Many students begin on their own: come up with a topic, find a faculty member to mentor you, ask in person, and you're on your way. It's that simple.

In some cases it's not so simple, so here are some resources that can help you get started. Whatever you do, be sure to choose a topic that excites you!

Honors Assemblies

We hold these for juniors in the fall, and they are all about helping you get started. We present suggestions to help you brainstorm a topic, find an Advisor, and write your proposal. Veteran Faculty Capstone Advisors from a range of majors are there to share their wisdom and answer questions. For many students, this is sufficient to get them started.

Browse the Capstone Archives

The Honors Library in 306 Bowne has a set of past projects going back to 1985, and a searchable database. You can search the complete set of past projects on-line from the Capstone "Home Page". Come see what past students have done; it's a great way to get inspired!

Distinction Programs

Many departments in A&S offer "Distinction" programs which guide you through a senior thesis. In some cases, that thesis will be your Capstone Project; in others, it will provide the basis for it. Some Distinction programs include a research seminar with fellow students to help you get started. No two Distinction programs are alike, so find out if your major offers one and check it out. Distinction programs provide a great way to complete a Capstone, and you graduate both with "Distinction" in the major and with Renée Crown University Honors. You may access the Capstone guide for more information on distinction programs.

Register for HNR 309: Capstone Project Planning Seminar

You can register for this in the fall of your junior year, or spring if you are abroad in the fall. HNR 309 is an optional, one-credit, pass-fail seminar designed to help you explore Capstones in your discipline, select a topic for yourself, and find a faculty member who will advise you.
