The Big Event, Part II
The Big Event, Part II
Kyra Meister (VPA, ’19) and Myles Johnson (AS, ’18) had great experiences volunteering at the Big Event, the largest day of student-run community service on campus.
After spending the morning organizing participants signed up for the event, Kyra volunteered at 2 of the 12 sites they had partnered with for the day: the Rescue Mission Kitchen and the Salvation Army. She helped make and serve lunch at the kitchen and cleaned at Salvation Army. Myles spent the day cleaning up Thornden Park by pulling weeds and cleaning flower beds and sidewalks.
Both Kyra and Myles learned a lot from this project. Helping out so close to campus, Myles came to understand the fact that sometimes it can be our own communities that need the most work, and by working on ourselves and the immediate community first we can be prepared to take on bigger challenges that may arise.
As one of 24 involved in planning this event, this experience expanded Kyra’s understanding of civic engagement. Being responsible for recruiting others to come to the event helped Kyla realize that getting more people involved in working in the community is incredibly crucial and beneficial community. In the future, she will look for organizations similar to the ones they worked with as they were all really great at getting everyone involved. “The people I worked with made it a great experience.”
