Making Spirits Bright
Making Spirits Bright
Hanna Martin (AS/PC, ’21) brought kids from Cumberland Country 4-H to sing Christmas carols to residents of Claremont Nursing Home in Carlisle, PA. They also handed out homemade cards that the 4-Hers had made throughout the year.
Hanna has done this activity for several years in a row now and each year, it always surprises her how something as simple as Christmas caroling can make someone’s entire week. This activity shows that civic service does not have to be strenuous or complicated; it can be something as simple as singing to the elderly. When the residents lit up with joy and sang along, it really showed her the impact they were making for them, even if it was just slight. Hanna reflected that elderly people are often overlooked when doing civic service, but this experience shows that even those who are in nursing homes can benefit from the service that young people are willing to give.
