Award Winners Announced!
The Honors Program inaugurated two Civic Engagement Awards this year and we are pleased and excited to announce the first winners.
Darcy Cherlin, Winner of the Career Achievement Award
Darcy’s civic engagement activities have been wide and various throughout her career at SU. In the past two years, her passion and energy have flowed into raising awareness and serving Karen refugee communities here in Syracuse and abroad. Darcy’s Capstone, “From Sydney to Syracuse: A Transcontinental Exploration of Women’s Health In Karen Refugee Communities” incorporated and motivated her activism which included organizing a fund raiser at Funk ‘n Waffles along with fellow Honors student, Alison Joy.
Ahnia Young, Winner of the Annual Civic Engagement Award
Ahnia has spent, by a modest estimate, 520 hours training and caring for the rescue horses at Sunshine Horses. Ahnia uses her specialized expertise in horsemanship as a means to give back to the Syracuse animal rescue community. Ahnia’s participation in Sunshine Horses has helped the organization reach beyond its former limits. She has ridden horses in Sunshine’s open house and has taken horses to local shows where she educates potential owners about the horse rescue. Her training and riding skills have helped to develop these horses into graceful, calm, and enjoyable mounts, many who have found forever homes as a result of her training.
Darcy and Ahnia’s work demonstrate what each of us can do to ensure that all creatures, great and small, have a safe forever home.
Watch for announcements in February if you would like to apply for one of our civic engagement awards.
