The sculpture garden is a metaphor for a student's experience as an undergraduate.

As you graduate from high school, you aim as high as you can on the strength of what you have already learned and experienced. Just like the archer whose bow is drawn taut and whose muscles provide the energy for the trajectory, you aren't sure where your arrows will land, but you aim as high as you can, with great optimism.

Your first year on campus can seem, at times, like a tangle of new experiences and expectations, which is why the University offers you seminars to explore ideas, get to know a professor and other students, and help you settle in as a student. The University also assigns you a faculty advisor or advisors, peer advisors, Residence Hall Directors and RAs, and professional advisors to answer your questions, aid you in your adjustment, and explore your options.

Sometimes choosing a major can seem a tangle, also. We offer you professional advisors with years of experience advising undecided or exploring students. Honors students in particular, given the multiplicity of their talents and interests, need special advising to help them explore the many options of combining majors, programs of study, and minors.

Just as Persphone felt a great burst of joy as she was liberated from Hades, students feel the same rush and are energized when they find the right major or majors, usually by the end of their sophomore year. Students often find their most creative and joyful work during their junior year.

If your studies ever feel just like toil, then something is wrong. Please come see one of the professional advisors in Honors if you ever feel this way.

Your Honors Capstone Project, like Moses, points the way to a future path. After graduation, your path may be to a job, or graduate or professional school. Your Honors Capstone Project is an exploration or creation of something especially important to you, which you are especially curious about, or that you want to explore in greater depth than in the standard major. The Capstone Project provides the structure to give you a foundation in your topic, to explore it at the graduate or advanced level, to supplement your Capstone Project with high-level, relevant courses, and to guide you to the right Advisors.
